U-M Health + St. Joe’s Medicare Advantage

Trinity Health/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System recently finalized an agreement with Physicians Health Plan (PHP) based in Lansing to offer a Medicare Advantage plan under the brands of St. Joe’s and Michigan Medicine. As a part of that agreement, McAuley Health Partners joined the PHP Medicare provider network. The foundation of this plan is to further the delivery of exceptional, compassionate care to our patients and communities we serve.

About Physicians Health Plan

Physicians Health Plan (PHP) is a leader in provider-sponsored health plans. Based in Lansing, MI, PHP was founded in 1980 with three main beliefs to better serve their members and communities: 1) local healthcare delivery is better healthcare; 2) personal relationships matter; and 3) flexibility in healthcare solutions support both the individual and the community.

Sparrow Health System is the majority owner of PHP. In 2019, Michigan Medicine and, in September 2021, Covenant HealthCare invested in PHP as minority owners.

PHP Medicare

In 2020, PHP’s first Medicare Advantage plan year, Sparrow Advantage and Covenant Advantage were the fastest growing new Medicare Advantage with Part D plans in the country based on January 2020 CMS enrollment data.

In 2021, Sparrow Advantage had the top net gain and greatest market share gain of all Medicare Advantage plans based on January 2021 CMS enrollment data.

In 2022, PHP will expand its Medicare Advantage plan to Washtenaw and Livingston counties in partnership with Michigan Medicine and Trinity Health, and in Jackson County under the PHP Advantage plan name.

U-M Health + St. Joe’s Medicare Advantage

In Washtenaw and Livingston counties, the plan will be co-branded with the Michigan Medicine and St. Joe’s logos and under the name U-M Health + St. Joe’s Medicare Advantage. There will be extensive marketing to Medicare-eligibles beginning Oct. 1.

We want you to have the details of what this means so you are prepared in case you receive questions from patients. You are not being asked to promote the plan. Rather, be aware of the strategic priority with PHP and the details of the plan.
